California hiker airlifted to hospital after getting bitten by a rattlesnake

A 26-year-old woman was airlifted to a hospital Saturday morning after she was bitten by a rattlesnake while hiking with her dog on Romero Canyon Trail near Santa Barbara.

“As the weather warms up, wildlife is coming out,” fire officials said. “Please use caution while hiking, be hyper vigilant of your surroundings and maintain awareness of your location.”

Rattlesnakes have been thriving in California as of late, making encounters even more likely, and the seven species found in the state could continue to expand their numbers as other native animal populations shrink due to climate change. Warming temperatures are great for the reptiles, which are thermoregulators, meaning they can preserve and change their body temperature to better adapt to their surroundings. As the California climate gets hotter over time, the snakes can more easily reach a preferred body temperature of 86 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit, which can be more optimal for digestion or reproduction.

방울뱀은 최근 캘리포니아에서 번성하여 만남의 가능성이 더욱 높아졌으며, 주에서 발견된 7종의 방울뱀은 기후 변화로 인해 다른 토착 동물 개체수가 줄어들면서 계속해서 그 수를 늘릴 수 있다. 온난화 온도는 변온동물인 파충류에게 매우 좋다. 즉, 주변 환경에 더 잘 적응하기 위해 체온을 보존하고 변경할 수 있다. 캘리포니아 기후가 시간이 지남에 따라 더워짐에 따라 뱀은 선호하는 체온인 화씨 86~89도에 더 쉽게 도달할 수 있으며, 이는 소화 또는 번식에 더 적합할 수 있다.

Rattlesnake season is in full swing, so if you’re venturing out for a hike, wildlife officials recommend staying on trails, watching where you’re stepping, and avoiding rock, wood or other debris piles. Wear close-toed shoes and avoid stepping or sitting in brushy areas or environments where you can’t see your surroundings. If you do see a rattlesnake, give it space, don’t touch it, and avoid doing anything that could provoke it, like staring at it for a lengthy period of time. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says most snake bites occur between April and October, when more people are out and about in nature, but fatal bites are rare.
